  6. PARIS (Reuter) - Hackers have tapped into a navy computer system and gained
  7. access to secret French and allied data, the investigative and satirical
  8. weekly Le Canard Enchaine said.

  10. The newspaper, which goes on sale Wednesday, said President Jacques Chirac
  11. had ordered a major investigation. The French armed forces had no immediate
  12. comment, although Le Canard Enchaine said Defense Minister Charles Millon's
  13. office had confirmed the story.

  15. o Hackers gained access to the system in July and captured files with
  16. acoustic signatures of hundreds of French and allied ships. The signatures
  17. are used in submarine warfare to identify friend and foes by analyzing
  18. unique acoustic characteristics of individual vessels.

  20. o US and UK liaison officers were reportedly furious, while some French
  21. officers suspect US military agencies were testing French security.
